Non-NaWriMo Offering #1

What a sale on canvas from Michaels will do. The pieces I’m posting this month are from August and on. In September, I bought a deck of Art Oracle cards at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Each card has an artist and a few related “fortunes”. Twice now, I’ve drawn Wassily Kandinsky. Me and Kandinsky have a past. I picked his picture Heavy Circles as an inspiration for a report I did in a class on LA museums. Heavy Circles is on display at the Norton Simon in Pasadena. It was part of a collection of a woman named Galka Scheyer. She was an artist, instructor, lecturer and the advocate in the US for Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger & Alexei Jawlensky (known collectively as the Blue Four). I ended up doing my report on Scheyer and hope to go more research into her. But back to the Art Oracle and Kandinsky. That fortune card said this:

  • Transcend Systems to Find Spirit
  • Hear Music thru Sight
  • Begin with a Dot

I love love that last one. Just start it says. So I did. I even took more literally and focused on dots and the texture within and around them. You’ll see what I mean.

(Art Oracles is written by Katy’s Tylevich and illustrated by Mikkelson Sommer. A classic museum gift shop offering that I totally dig.)
