Obsessed With PBS: John Lennon Vs Tina Fey

Well, Tina Fey won.

Not just because on more than one occasion people have said I am very Fey-esque when wearing my glasses.  She is awesome and deservedly was honored as this year’s recipient of The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.  PBS televised the evening full of tributes and clips and funny speeches.  (Side note: apparently though, PBS edited out some of Fey’s jabs at Sarah Palin in her acceptance speech.  They said it was edited for time. I narrow my eyes at them in suspicion…)

That show left me happy.  I cannot say the same for Masterpiece Contemporary’s Lennon Naked.  My Two Cents AKA Not Well Thought-out Criticism:

  • No introduction by David Tennant. So yes, I started Lennon Naked with a wee bit of bitterness.
  • Christopher Eccleston doing John Lennon’s accent. It sounded like a parody of a Liverpool accent.  Nothing against Eccleston.  I loved him as Doctor Who and I was sad he only did one season.  Sad that is until Tennant put on those glasses.  I loved my Who in glasses…
  • Christopher Eccleston as Lennon looking creepily a lot like the hippie photos of my ex-stepfather.  Distracting.
  • Lennon, according to this film, was a complete asshole with no likeable qualities at all.  Now I will fully admit that I don’t know much about Lennon except for surface stuff.  I just love The Beatles and some of Lennon’s solo songs.  Maybe he truly was a complete joyless dickhead who was mean to everyone except Yoko.   To me, that’s not entertaining to watch.
  • But hey! Tosh from Torchwood is Yoko!  Nice to see her getting more work…

What did I learn from Tina Fey and John Lennon?  That I hope and pray that Masterpiece Contemporary never airs Fey Naked.
